Who Am I? Why am I here? Why are any of us here? These are first-class essential questions. The kind of questions many people laughed about when Admiral James Bond Stockdale posed them in a vice-presidential debate in 1992. Who wants a politician to wax philosophical when he could act like he knows all the answers? Apparently, people like me. The need to question and reflect seems to be part of my personality - an inextricable part. I believe I need to take these kinds of questions seriously, but while doing so, try not to take my answers or myself too seriously. My guess is as good as anyone else’s, after all. Maybe the lesson, if there is one, is to struggle with questions like these, to stretch my capacity for understanding, to challenge my ability to tolerate divergent views, to look at life creatively, to remain unafraid to cling to old ideas when they are good and move on to new ideas when they are constructive. The great moral philosopher, Red Skelton, once said he believed we are put on earth “to create and not to destroy.” I sincerely hope my stories and musings will somehow help others grapple with their own questions and follow their best impulses towards creating a better world.

The Law

Originally posted on Facebook, August 5, 2020. The law is one thing – human behavior is another. While we might think a policy or law will solve a problem, common practice is often more powerful than written rules. We need to remember the statutes and court decisions that enabled the slave trade, the Jim Crow … Continue reading The Law →

Looking Ahead

“A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit.” – Elton Trueblood, 1951. Based on an ancient concept. Those who began the construction of the great cathedrals knew they were likely to be dead … Continue reading Looking Ahead →

Never Assume

A few years ago, I was eating a chocolate chip cookie and thought a piece of it had fallen on my shirt. Without further thought, I picked it up and popped it into my mouth. I quickly learned it was not even remotely close to a cookie crumb in texture or taste. The sensation began … Continue reading Never Assume →

Normalcy

When I was working on my master’s degree, one of my friends, a soprano studying opera, invited me to come to a party with her. Upon entering the room, I noticed that something was not “normal,” at least according to my small-town sensibilities. There were many more guys than gals, and a few were in … Continue reading Normalcy →

Attention!

In my college classes we discussed what it takes to get an audience’s attention. “What is the role of artistry vs. the shock value of a moment?” “What does it take to get your attention?” Often, wardrobe malfunctions, same-sex stage kisses, erotic dance moves, suggestive lyrics, outrageous tweets, and other examples entered the mix. An … Continue reading Attention! →

Confidence

Several years ago, we had the privilege of playing for a wedding in France. My French is not very good, so I was only able to pick up on some of what the Priest had to say. He used the word, “confiance,” in his homily – confiance – confidence, or trust seemed to be the … Continue reading Confidence →

Intelligence

A few years ago, one of my doctors retired. I miss his care and advice. Even more, I miss the little conversations we used to have on various topics. Full disclosure – one reason he retired is because the corporation dictated that he couldn’t spend time on such conversations. The process was becoming too much … Continue reading Intelligence →

Followership

Many years ago, I decided to change things up a little in my critical thinking class. I was growing impatient with all the emphasis on leadership as an educational buzzword – leadership conferences, leadership courses, leadership seminars, leadership development, and so on. I began to wonder about followers. What would leaders be without followers? So, … Continue reading Followership →

Wisdom

In search of wisdom… Job, Chapter 28, asserts that wisdom cannot be found in gold, silver, or precious gems. According to this passage, wisdom is “hidden from the eyes of every living thing.” Even destruction and death have only heard rumors of wisdom. God alone knows where to find it: “The fear of the Lord … Continue reading Wisdom →
