My Dear Raventrap ~

Your question about dividing the little tramps based on the perceived conflicts between their science and their religion was very thought-provoking. I suppose in the end it all boils down to how we can exploit our clients’ dedication to one or the other. While stirring the pot of conflict is indeed rewarding, that shouldn’t be our only goal. As always, we need to attack on the personal level, and our global divisive practices are only the first of many wedges that can drive our clients apart. Our Executive’s Council on Division has been undertaking some outstanding work in this area. In general, COD guidelines specify maximizing minor differences while attenuating avenues of agreement. For example, whenever science seems to reinforce some religious ideal, seek to obscure any connection between the two; and whenever there is the slightest disagreement, make sure your clients see it as a major controversy. If those involved in science view the more religiously inclined as ignorant or superstitious, while those devoted to religion think scientists are without morals and somehow out to destroy religion, it’s a win-win for The Corporation. You see, Raventrap, it really doesn’t matter to us what side our clients are on as long as they choose a side, and then stubbornly refuse to acknowledge there are other points of view to consider.

It works like this. Since the vast majority of our clients are pretty much ignorant of the methods of science as well as the requirements of religion, they can easily be manipulated into believing whatever they want to believe. Furthermore, to us it’s relatively unimportant what they believe as long as they come to believe it merely because they want to ~ and this is important ~ for no other reason. They could be parroting somebody else’s beliefs, but as long as they hold them for no better reason than self-satisfaction, they will be moving in our direction. We want a total assertion of the self, not a well-reasoned or well-tempered system of beliefs. The more focused our clients are on believing a thing just because they want it to be true, the closer they come to Hell. The self is the key. Generally speaking, you can ensnare your more religious clients’ contracts the moment they become completely convinced their religion demands them to hold anyone who isn’t a part of that religion in total contempt. On the other hand, you can lead your scientist clients to believe their scientific expertise entitles them to scorn the religious as if they had nothing to offer. Our Competitor understands these fields of knowledge to be artificial distinctions. To Him, science and religion are like two sides of an exceedingly large coin. Never mind what He thinks. We understand them to be equally useful in terms of advancing The Corporation’s agenda.

From the intelligence we have been able to gather so far, it seems Our Competitor isn’t threatened in the least by the methods or conclusions of science. Perhaps He already knows what the little snoops are going to discover, or possibly His business empire is bigger than we have imagined, but nevertheless, He somehow seems to be above all the fray about the findings of science. Likewise, Our Competitor doesn’t seem to be troubled by the tenets of various religions. Rumor has it He believes in a concept called, “grace.” We have no idea in Hell what that concept involves, yet we suspect it has something to do with Our Competitor’s son, “What’s His Name.” Centuries ago, He promoted His son to the position of “General Counsel” of His organization. Putting aside the rather obvious nepotism of this move, “What’s His Name” is supposed to be some sort of “Advocate” for the little earthworms. It’s undoubtedly daunting to us that all He asks is a little “faith” ~ another elusive concept ~ and He can reassure them Our Competitor will gladly pick up their contracts in perpetuity. “What’s His Name” seems to be in a position to change the game for all concerned. If only we understood what He is really up to! I understand Our Executive has charged a special committee to look into the matter and report to Him as soon as more is known.

In the meantime, we must see to it that science and religion continue to do battle. Cajole each faction to attack the credibility of the other. You can trick either side into embarrassing itself in an attempt to suppress the other. Religion has been provoked to all sorts of atrocious behavior directed against science as well as other religions. You’ve no doubt heard of Giordano Bruno, killed by members of a religion, in part because of his cosmological theories, and Galileo Galilei, persecuted for publishing his research into the movements of the stars and planets. Science has also been persuaded to ridicule religion in the name of “rationality.” And the findings of science have been used as rationalizations for ~ and tools of ~ cruelty and subjugation, as these have been practiced by many nations throughout the course of human history.

Not that we care about truth, but one of the better human scientists put it succinctly: “science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.” What the little cretins have are two ways of knowing, not two opposing world views. But for Our Executive’s sake, let’s not let them realize this rather obvious fact. By taking full advantage of artificial “controversies” such as Science vs. Religion, He has been able to claim the contracts of many who became so self-absorbed they habitually chose to think the worst of the “opposition,” and sooner or later ended up replacing mutual respect with the three D’s: distrust, derision, and detestation.

Your Devoted Cousin,

Bloodstone
